Politics of Denial
2020
Wood test tube holder, test tubes, willow charcoal, painted roots, Toby Jugs
17x22x5 inches

‘Politics of Denial’ is both a devastated landscape and a scientific assessment of carbon stocks based on forest inventory methodologies. Thick sticks of willow charcoal are inserted into test tubes labelled with the terminologies of climate change in respect to local and global concerns.  Perched upside down on three of the sticks, small Toby Jugs characters stand in for elected governmental officials evading the development and implementation of aggressive climate policy. Appearing in England at the start of the Industrial Revolution, the Toby Jugs link a time of systematic pursuit of profit with the spike in greenhouse gas emissions. Stretching from Europe, particularly from Britain, across cultural and political divides; the economics of capitalism consumed the West.  We are coming to realize that this system is incompatible with climate action. Policymaking must include stringent environmental legislation governing, amongst other things, land use policy, carbon storage objectives, and forest carbon mitigation and wildlife habitat protection within strictly binding international collective agreements.  Or ‘heads will roll’.
