Natural Selection
2012
Wooden drawer, specimen bags, sheep wool
4x24x17 inches
Installation view, Iceland
In Iceland there is conflict between the planting of trees and the grazing of sheep. ‘Natural Selection’ involves small sample bags full of Icelandic sheep’s wool, labeled with the scientific, Icelandic and common English names for native plant species. Sheep grazing has devastated the landscape, destabilizing soil then vulnerable to wind and rain runoff. Sheep having priority over everything is an old custom in Iceland. It will take a long time to change.
